STROBING MAKEUP – The Best Highlighting Products

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

Strobing makeup trend. Some of you might have heard/ seen the buzz strobing makeup has created over the past few weeks. Contouring has been hot trend for a while now thanks to internet famous Kim Kardashian and At this stage even your old aged ant knows how to do it! (and if she doesn’t get her to watch my HOW TO CONTOUR AND HIGHLIGHT video 🙂

Move over contouring, now it’s time to glow!

But what is this STROBING trend all about?

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

The best part about it is that it DOESN’T involve putting layers and layers of product on your face. So those of you, like me who aren’t big fans of heavy makeup should become STROBING enthusiasts, or at least have a read about it.

Instead of painting those layers of concealers on your face,  dig out all your illuminating products- the highlighters.  Strobing is nothing more than highlighter, applied where light would naturally hit your face ( your cheekbones, brow bones, the center of your forehead, down your nose, and chin.) Adding all those shimmery shades will make your complexion look super radiant, fresh, healthy  and young l The best part? Your skin will actually thank you for that as you won’t be putting layers and layers of makeup in the Summer heat.

The higlight is the key and today I will talk to you about best highlighters available on the market. Powder, cream I tried all of them.  At this point I can easily say I know a thing or two about highlighters.

    THE BASE.

If you wish to achieve this glow makeup look you need to make sure you start with the base. There’s only one rule: do not use matt products. Yes I know that for those of you with oily skin it might not be the best idea but that’s what strobing is- it’s all about that glow.

My two favourite base product I always use when I want to achieve that glow are:

    1. STAY ALL DAY, 10 in 1, HD ILLUMINATING BALM by STILLA – £26 / € 37

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

Besides this really long name I totally love this product! Not only  it gives you that illuminating finish, has SPF 30 but it’s coverage (light/medium) is perfect to cover all imperfections without giving you that I AM WEARING A FOUNDATION feeling. Just perfect for the summer! This product comes in 1 universal shade which is suitable for most skin tones. The formula is great but it is rather thick as every high SPF product. The application goes really smooth, it blends well and doesn’t leave patches. This illuminating balm acts as my go to summer foundation alternative.

If I do not need any coverage on my face I go for

    2. LE BLANC DE CHANEL MULTI-USE ILLUMINATING BASE by CHANEL £29 / € 42

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

This product can be used in multiple ways; primer – makeup base applied prior to your foundation, I sometimes mix it with my foundation, apply it only to areas I want to highlight or use it on its own on my no makeup days. It will not only give you this all over radiant glow but it also makes your foundation guide on smoothly.

After you apply your foundation/ illuminating base its time for highlighting. And thats when it getting a  bit more complicated. Highlighters come in various forms: powders, sticks, creams etc and that’s when you have to make a choice: cream vs powder vs both?

The only minus if this product is the packaging. It comes in a jar. Little stick to apply is include in the packaging but when you are running short of product it might be quite difficult to get it out.

My favourite must be powder form as I feel you get the most of it. Don’t get me wrong, cream highlighters are great too! If you are looking to achieve this strobing look I would recommend to use both.

So lets start from cream products.

When to use cream highlighters? These illuminating products should be applied after your foundation but before you set it with powder. By using cream highlighters you want to add the glow to your face so make sure you set it up with illuminating powder rather than matte.

    THE CREAMS.

    1. SHADE AND ILLUMINATE PALETTE by Tom Ford  – £ 63 / € 64

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

This palette contains of two hades perfect for highlighting and contouring. It is my go to set. The highlight colour is more on silver- cold side. I really like the finish of this of the highlight as it is not IN YOUR FACE. It blends really well and a little goes a long way. The formula is rather thick but it blends really well.  I guess one of the disadvantages is that it retails for about €60 which is quite pricy but at the end of the day you do get 2 products: highlighter and illuminator in one. This product doesn’t really have a scent to it but when you apply you can smell it a bit and the small would be the best described as something right between pleasant and unpleasant.

    2. WOW SKIN TAN LIQUID GLOW by Seventeen  – £ 5.20 / € 7.50

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

This product works great especially if you are wearing a bit of tan on your face. It comes in 30 ml packaging and you only need very little to achieve this holiday goddess look. The colour is warm deep gold.  I usually apply it to my cheeks and temples mainly- when the sun would hit me naturally. This illuminator pairs really well with shimmer bronzers. It has very natural finish. It does not have a scent at all, blends pretty well but it leaves tiny bit of sticky feeling after applying.

    3. BORN TO GLOW LIQUID ILLUMINATOR by NYX  – £ 4.79 / € 6.88

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

I have to say this is my least favourite but still favourite liquid illuminator. The reason why I am not entirely happy with this product is because after blending you can see glitter like finish on your face. I do prefer illuminators which have more smooth, natural finish. You can apply to designated areas or use as overall base before applying your foundation. This product comes in two shades:  cold pink and warm gold. Mine is in cold pink. It retails for $ 7.50

Now when we have both: base and liquid highlighters covered it’s time to move on to my personal favourite – powder highlighters.

    THE POWDERS.

Powder higlighters are used to “sigh off” the look. You would apply your powder highlighter as very last step in your makeup routine. The application involves all the areas on your face you would like to optically bring forward, appear bigger and more prompt. I have chose 4 products which are my absolute go to product when it comes to higlighting your face- strobing makeup routine.

    1. MARY LOU MANIZER by The Balm – £ 14.26 / € 20.40

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

This is by far my most favourite highlighting product ever. I totally love the shade as it is exactly right in between warm and cold tone. The glow you get after applying is just unbelievable but at the same time super natural. Don’t get me wrong you won’t “shine bright like a diamond”  after use. The formula is really soft and smooth, the application  is really easy and the effect is amazing. I really don’t have anything bad to say about it other than it kinda breaks really easy. ( well I did drop it few times tho) So if you do not own a highlighter yetI would really recommend for you to get MARY LOU MANIZER.

    2. SUNBEAM HIGHLIGHTER by Top Shop – NO LOGER AVAILABLE

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

This highlighter is one of the most beautiful warm gold shades I have ever found amongst highlighters. The application is really smooth and it blends well. This product can be easily overdosed so make sure you take it easy when applying. Remember: in this case less is more. I love to use it as gold eyeshadow when I am going for more dramatic looks.

    3. SUN GLOW SHIMMERING BRONZING POWDER by Catrice Cosmetics – £ 3.82 / € 5.50

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

This is my newest babe. This powder is named bronzing powder as it has 2 shades to it. The bronzed pigments are on the sides and shimmer highlight is in the middle. I love using the shimmer to highlight my face and the bronzing shade is great for highlight too. The best part about it is that it retails for €5.50!! Say what girl!

    4. FACE FORM CONTOURING AND BLUSH PALETTE by Sleek Makeup – £ 9.38 / € 13.39

STROBING MAKEUP - The Best Highlighters

Last but not least in my powder highlighters favourites list is this beautiful trio from sleek makeup. It contains 3 beautiful shades- contour, highlight and blush which is more of shimmer bronzer than a blush.  Mine is in medium colour.  The highlight in palette is a golden pink shade and it works it’s best when your face is a bit tanned. The “blush” shade is burned gold and in my opinion it would make more sense to use it as a shimmer bronzer rather than blush. This palette comes in 4 shades- fair, light, medium and dark.

I hope this informations came useful to you. Happy strobing guys!!
